As a city, and as a holiday destination, Cape Town has it all. Jaw dropping scenery; the iconic Table Mountain; a beautiful coastline with pristine white beaches; delicious food and wine and all the excitement of a lively city, with a vibrant art scene, lively bars and great shops.

It’s also ideally placed to explore the surrounding areas of the Winelands, with their award-winning vineyards or perhaps even travel on to the Garden Route.

Getting to Cape Town

Easily accessible, with direct flights from London, as well as a wide range of connecting flights with major carriers. Flight time is 11 ½ hours and South Africa is between one and two hours ahead of the UK depending on the time of year.

Cape Town has year-round appeal with different highlights depending on when you visit. Mid-December to early January (summer) is peak season, with February and March still being hot, and April offering lovely temperatures. May, June and July tends to alternate between sunshine and showers, but the winter-flowering lilies, proteas and aloes are fabulous. July - November is fantastic for whale watching, whilst October and November see temperatures start to warm up again, with sunny days, quiet beaches and spectacular flora in the Cape.

South Africa is renowned for its fabulous wines, with great wine farms to visit in Franshoek and Stellenbosch. Some of the best include Babylonstoren - wander through the gardens, pick up supplies at the deli and taste the superb wines; Jordan Wines - an excellent restaurant with amazing views; Delaire - perhaps one of Cape Town’s most famous and Tokara.

Art

Known as the art centre of Africa, Cape Town has a great choice of galleries to visit in the city itself as well as the Winelands

  • Visit on a Thursday night, when most of the galleries are open until late, often with a DJ and drinks.
  • An hour or so from Cape Town, visit the magical Dylan Lewis sculpture garden
  • See some fabulous contemporary African art at Zeitzmocaa - a contemporary African Art museum in an old silo at the Waterfront.
